UPCOMING EVENTS
  • Join us at Oblong to celebrate the conclusion of Matilde Søes Rasmussen's The Perfect Model. Matilde will read some of the personal texts she wrote in the process of creating her new body of work. The texts explore her process, thoughts and feelings towards the subjects explored in the exhibition.

PAST EVENTS
  • As part of the programme for both Copenhagen Photo Festival and Art Matter Festival, Oblong is excited to present The Perfect Model, an exhibition by artist Matilde Søes Rasmussen.

Join us for the opening on Thursday 9th May, 17:00-21:00. Sponsored by Herslev Bryghus

Audrey Munson was the most sought-after model of early-20th century New York. In 2023 Matilde Søes Rasmussen documented traces of the artist-muse Munson still visible throughout the city, using them as inspiration for The Perfect Model. The exhibition brings together Rasmussen’s research from different stages and experiences of being a model, moving freely between photography, text and video.

Drawing on her own experiences of being a professional model, Rasmussen explores historical and contemporary forms of female representation in image production – commodified and sold bodies, silent and nameless muses. The Perfect Model is a work about guilt, the guilt felt by an artist now behind the lens, objectifying the world around her. Rasmussen questions whether it is possible to critique the beauty industry and systems of female representation while taking pictures of it.

    The exhibition runs 09.05 - 15.06.24

The Perfect Model is supported by Statens Kunstfond, Frederiksberg Fonden and Beckett Fonden

  • Garry Winogrand: All Things Are Photographable (2018)

Screening at Oblong Wed 1st May 19.30

Join us for a drink beforehand from 18.30

Screening is FREE, dm for a seat

Described as a “poet,” an “athlete,” or a “philosopher” of photography, Garry Winogrand harnessed the serendipity of the streets to capture the American 1960s and ‘70s. His Leica M4 snapped spontaneous images of everyday people, from the Mad Men era of New York to the early years of the Women’s Movement to post-Golden Age Hollywood, all while observing themes of cultural upheaval, political disillusionment, intimacy and alienation.

All Things Are Photographable examines Winogrand’s work including the thousands of rolls of film still undeveloped upon his death in 1984. What emerges is a controversial yet undeniable influence on contemporary image making.

A HUGE thanks to the director of the film Sasha Waters Freyer for giving us permission to screen the film @winograndfilm

Sasha Waters Freyer is an American documentary and experimental filmmaker, and educator. She has been a fellow at MacDowell, Yaddo, and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts; was awarded a 2019-20 Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship, and is the 2016 recipient of the Helen Hill Award from the Orphan Film Symposium. A professor of Film and Art Foundation at VCU in Richmond, she is included in Edited By: Women Film Editors, a survey of women who “invented, developed, fine-tuned and revolutionized the art of film editing,” and in the FemEx Film Archive, an ongoing collective archive of interviews with feminist experimental filmmakers.

  • Oblong is excited to present Tales of a Nomadic City, an exhibition by anthropologist and artist Christian Vium (b. 1980).

Join us for the opening on Thursday 14th March, 17:00-21:00

For two decades, Vium has been doing research in Nouakchott, the capital city of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania. Through a series of interrelated elements comprising a VR experience (made with Mauritanian filmmaker Med Lemine Rajel), archival film, new film recordings, photographs, sound, physical objects and printed publications, the exhibition provides a kaleidoscopic invitation to visit a unique, nomadic city, and asks questions regarding urbanisation, history, and archives.

    The exhibition runs 14.03 - 20.04.24

Tales of a Nomadic City is supported by Politiken Fonden, Aarhus University, Wenner-Gren Foundation, The Velux Foundations, CPH:DOX, Ny Carlsbergfondet and Det Danske Institut i Damaskus

  • Oblong is excited to present an exhibition of new photographic works by artist Luna Lopez. Growing Silence is Luna’s first solo show in Denmark.

Join us for the opening on Thursday 19th October, 17.00-21.00

Growing Silence continues Lopez’s exploration of the human psyche. Her subjects surrender to the camera, exposing their vulnerability while retaining their strength, power and individualism. Lopez’s photographs render an interplay between alienation and connection, introspection and self-expression.

Luna Lopez (b. 1996) is a Danish-born artist, currently living in Gothenburg, Sweden. Lopez completed her BFA in photography at the University of Gothenburg in 2021 and graduated from Fatamorgana, the Danish School of Art Photography in 2015.

Join us for the opening on Thursday 3rd August, 17:00-21:00

The exhibition surveys the spaces that over decades, if not centuries, have formed the framework for sexual and intimate relationships between men. • Oblong is proud to present new works by artists Paula Duvå and Mads Holm. Having collaborated many times in the past, Double Sunset marks a natural progression in their working relationship as they share co-authorship for the first time.

Join us for the opening of Double Sunset on Thursday 18th May between 17.00-21.00

A double sunset is an astro-geographical phenomenon in which the sun appears to set twice in the same evening, when viewed from a specific point. This rare event is as much an optical illusion as a real experience for the observer. Like a double sunset, Duvå and Holm’s new work oscillates between the real and fictional and challenges, by its staged nature, photography’s conventional ties to reality.

    The exhibition runs 18.05 - 01.07.23

The exhibition is supported by Statens Kunstfond

  • Oblong is excited to host an artist talk with Minh Ngoc Nguyen. Minh will be joined in conversation by Pam Van Delyra.

Taking his Vietnamese background as a starting point, Nguyen examines Western portrayals of South-East Asian culture. His elaborate tableaus and set-pieces create a hyperreal universe, that is at once playful and demanding. Everlasting Karaoke is a vibrant feast, not to be missed.

    Show runs 30.03 - 05.05.23

The exhibition is supported by Statens Kunstfond

The film follows a 75 year-old Martha as she tours the world, feted and idolised by generations of graffiti and hip hop fans. Still out there running around, breaking into train yards with graffiti crews, Martha is a one-of-a-kind personality. A real life-affirming film!

Salut Les Cubains was made four years after the Cuban Revolution. A lyrical documentary about early post-revolution life and composed of 1800 photographs taken by Varda on her visit.

La Jetée is widely regarded as one of the greatest science-fiction films of all time. Its portrayal of a dystopian post-nuclear world remains a huge inspiration.

Alongside his stills, Klein made films including a portrait of Muhammad Ali and documenting the Paris student uprising of 1968. His left-leaning sensibilities eventually got him ousted from American Vogue.

The screening will be followed by a talk between Liv Latricia Habel, Keiria Hissabu, and Stine Likodelle.

The event is FREE of charge.

Corinne Day changed the face of fashion photography throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. Her images stripped away the glamour and sheen, embracing a raw, honest aesthetic.

Though often embroiled in controversy, Day battled on as a true pioneer. Whether shooting images for Vogue, or depicting the drug-fuelled lives of her friends, she remained unwavering in her approach.

This 20-year-old BBC documentary is a rare find. Directed by her husband Mark Szaszy, the film is an intimate portrait of an artist who’s influence remains profound today.

  • To celebrate the culmination of our first exhibition INFLUENCE, we’ll be hosting a finissage.

Come down, hang out Thursday August 4th from 17-20.

  • Join us as we open the doors to Oblong for the first time on Saturday 18th June.

Oblong is a new exhibition space for photography based in Frederiksberg. We’re here to support and celebrate the photography community. We couldn’t be more excited to share the work of eight great artists in our opening exhibition INFLUENCE.

‘As each of us attempt to forge our place in the world, we fall under influence. We inherit from family, peer group, institutions, media, culture, national society, global community. Online or offline, we are shaped by these disparate streams to become conduit; each one of us an influence on others with whom we encounter and engage.’

INFLUENCE brings together the work of eight artists working within photography. Each of them bringing a sense of vibrancy and urgency to the medium. Oblong is excited to exhibit these artists together for the first time.

Stop by for a drink and a chat and to check out the show. We also have a performance from the wonderful ‘princess waterfall’. We're there 14.00-20.00.
