EXHIBITION Statement

Hello “Soul Mate” is a personal and poetic photobook by Danish artist André Viking. Drawing on his own family’s photo albums and love letters sent by his father during a prison sentence, Viking creates a touching and fragmented portrait of memory, identity and connection across time.

The book bridges the private and the societal, exploring how incarceration affects not only the individual but also those closest to them. By combining family photographs taken by various relatives with fragments of his father’s handwritten letters, the work raises questions about what we remember, how we remember and who gets to decide what is worth keeping. Viking is not the photographer, but the one who assembles and reimagines, allowing the family archive to speak in new ways.

Hello “Soul Mate” is both an archive and a new narrative, where the intimate becomes universal. It reflects on love, absence and the longing to piece together a past that can’t be changed but perhaps can be understood in new ways.

Artist

André Viking (b.1989) is a Danish visual artist currently living and working in Copenhagen, Denmark. After graduating from Copenhagen Film and Photography School, he completed the Creative Practices Program at The International Center of Photography. In his current practice, he uses photography’s perceived authority as a tool to investigate and challenge our idea of a singular reality.

Since completing his studies, his work has been supported by various grants and awards, including from the Danish Arts Foundation, the PARALLEL Platform, and Bikuben Foundation. His work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally, with exhibitions at the Robert Capa Contemporary Photography Center in Budapest, Fotografisk Center in Copenhagen, and Burrard Arts Foundation in Vancouver.
